Description
- Apricots, locally known as “chuli” (for fresh apricots) and as “Phating” (for dry apricots), are the most delicious, nutritious and economically important fruit crops in the Kargil region. Believed to be brought to the region from Baltistan and Central Asia, apricots were a major trading commodity and a universally accepted currency for barter when the trans-himalayan trade was flourishing, in which Kargil was a key feeder route.
- Apricots are an integral part of the Kargili traditions and cultural life. Kargilis prepare apricot dishes in weddings and other social ceremonies; guests are offered apricots as a welcome or farewell gift; they are also offered as a gesture of goodwill for various business and social transactions.
